Firefighters Combat Challenge - Wainuiomata, 2 Feb 2008
Saturday 2nd of February 2008 saw some members of the unit travel over the hill to Wainuiomata Fire Station to assist in the running of the Inaugural fire fighters combat challenge. This was hosted by the Wainuiomata fire brigade in conjunction with the Hutt Wellington Kapiti Sub Association and the Canterbury Provincial Fire Brigades Association (CPFBA) who provided the equipment.
The unit was tasked with setting up the course and laying out the gear with the help and guidance of SO Andrew Mansfield from the Seaview fire station and two members from the CPFBA. Tasks included the lowering of the hoses from the top of the tower, resetting the logs, relaying the two hoses, the recovery of the two manikins, as well as resetting the water targets between each run.
After the competition had finished around 1230 it was into clean up and restow of all the equipment followed by a BBQ lunch and a cold refreshment.
After the meal it was then into the main formalities and including the presentation of awards. All members of the unit who helped on the day got a great deal out of this event and look forward to the next one.
ANZAC Day - 25 April 2008
Members of the Hutt Valley Fire Police Unit participated in ANZAC Day services across the Hutt Valley on this day, April 25th. ANZAC Day is a day where we as a community remember those who have served and died in the name of Australia and New Zealand in conflicts the world over.
In Upper Hutt a substantial number of uniformed members of the NZ Defence Force, NZ Police, NZ Fire Service, Cadet Forces, Scouts, Guides, and St John Ambulance Cadets joined with members of the Upper Hutt RSA to pay respects. The parade marched from Queen Street through to the front of the City Council Buildings and the Cenotaph. BRIG A D Gawn, MBE, Land Component Commander, Headquarters Joint Forces NZ, addressed the parade and the gathered supporters. The Last Post was played, wreaths were laid and the National Anthem was sung with pride.
At the conclusion of the service the NZDF led parade marched back to Queen St and when dismissed, participants and families gathered at the RSA for a hot breakfast and refreshments.
